“Design is serious” Manifesto, 2021

This project was a part of the Digital Laboratory II module and consisted mainly in the creation of an editorial composed of 3 different manifestos: First Things First (1964), First Things First (2000), and First Things First (2020). In addition, there was to be chosen a text that either complimented or gave purpose to the editorial. In this case, Paula Scher’s “Great design is serious, not solemn” speech felt the most appropriate choice because it offered a perspective on the objective of design, similar to the first three manifestos.
Due to a personal view that design must be conscious, the only paper that had been bought previously was used when bringing this project together - recycled paper, cardboard, and colourful tracing paper.

The spine is exposed because the project was early on decided to be more experimental and, throughout the whole editorial, each section was purposefully designed to be “contaminated” by the one before. It was also printed using a silkscreen printing method as the project called for a hardcover.
